We engineered this spade with a closed back construction. We manufacture the blade using extra thick 12 gauge steel. We apply a black powder coat finish to make it resist both corrosion and the elements. Turned down steps on the top of the blade feature pre drilled holes for a foot pad (sold seperate) We secure the blade to the handle
